World’s first Face, Arm and Leg Transfer

It is worldwide news flash that in Turkey a face was taken from Ahmet Kaya and transferred to Ugur Acar.

What makes it remarkable is it’s the world’s first transplant of two arms and a leg at the same time in Akdeniz University Medical Faculty by Dr Omer Ozkan and his team.

The surgery was completed successfully and the patient woke up to a new whole face (all skin tissue, nose bones, eyelids and the tear canals). But due to the healing tissue and bandages, the doctors will not let the patient see himself until about 10 days after surgery. Prior to this, the world’s first partial (only mouth and nose area) face transfer was made in 2005 to Isabelle Dinoire in France.

The first whole face fix/renew operation was made in India to a child named Sandeep Kaur. Her pulled off face was brought to the hospital in 2 separate pieces in a plastic bag by her mother. After a long surgery operation the child’s face was fixed/renewed with her own tissues.

The first whole face transfer (most similar to turkish version) was completed in Spain on March 20^th, 2010. A patient named Oscar shot his own face with a gun by mistake and he got a new whole face successfully transferred by a team of 30 spanish surgeons.

French surgeons claim that the world’s first whole face transfer took place in France on June 8th 2010, however they never publicized the patient’s name or any details of the procedure and only one photo was leaked about this operation to the press. They claim this was a whole face transfer because the eyelids and tear ducts were transplanted, unlike the case in Spain.

The U.S.’s first face transfer was made to Connie Culp who got shot in face by her husband.

The U.S.’s first whole face transfer was made to Dallas Wiens whose face burnt by high voltage electricity in 2011.
